A US dental hygienist earns a median $47.16 an hour, equivalent to $98,100 a year on the BLS annual pay measure. Those are May 2025 wage estimates, the latest national and state release reviewed for this October 2026 guide. Your actual annual earnings depend on how many hours and weeks you are paid, which matters when a practice offers only three or four days a week.

For example, $50 an hour produces $57,600 over 24 paid hours a week for 48 weeks, or $76,800 over 32 hours for the same period. Use the state benchmarks below to judge your rate, then compare the schedule, benefits, school costs, and working conditions before deciding whether an offer is worthwhile.

Updated October 21, 2026. US wages are gross pay before taxes. International figures remain in local currencies and use different measurement methods.

Dental Hygienist Salary at a Glance

US pay measureMay 2025 figureHow to use it
Median hourly wage$47.16A national reference for comparing an hourly offer.
Median annual wage$98,100An annualized benchmark, not a promise of 40 paid hours each week.
Mean annual wage$98,990The arithmetic average, which differs from the median.
Lower and upper 10 percent thresholds$74,880 and $126,050 annuallyDescribe the wage distribution, not fixed starting and senior salaries.
Projected employment growth8% from 2025 to 2035A national outlook, not a local hiring guarantee.

Sources: BLS national and state wage downloads, occupation SOC 29-1292, and the Dental Hygienists Occupational Outlook Handbook. The median is the midpoint of the wage distribution. It is usually a more useful negotiation reference than a headline average.

RDH means registered dental hygienist. Dental assistants, dental therapists, dentists, and hygienists have different qualifications and permitted duties. A dental assistant’s salary is not a substitute for an RDH wage benchmark.

Hourly Pay and Actual Annual Earnings

Hourly Pay and Actual Annual Earnings

Start with this calculation: hourly rate × paid hours per week × paid weeks per year = estimated annual gross wages. If your schedule varies, total the paid hours across the year instead. Count paid leave once; do not add holiday pay again after already including it in paid weeks.

Illustrative schedule at $50 an hourPaid hours per yearAnnual gross
Three 8-hour days for 48 paid weeks1,152$57,600
Four 8-hour days for 48 paid weeks1,536$76,800
Five 8-hour days for 48 paid weeks1,920$96,000
40 hours for 52 paid weeks2,080$104,000

These are examples, not claims that a particular schedule is available. An eight-hour opening on the appointment calendar may include an unpaid meal break or gaps that affect paid time. Ask how the employer records setup, charting, meetings, cancellations, and early finishes, and request the policy in writing.

The BLS wage methodology uses a typical 2,080-hour year for annualization. Its wage measure excludes employer benefit costs and overtime premiums; it includes commissions and production bonuses. It also excludes self-employed workers. Treat the published annual figure as a rate comparison rather than a count of what every part-time hygienist received during the year.

At the national median rate, 32 paid hours for 48 weeks produces approximately $72,438 before taxes. That schedule is roughly $25,662 below the published $98,100 annual benchmark. The difference comes mainly from paid time, not a lower hourly wage.

Starting Pay and Experienced Dental Hygienist Salaries

Wage distributionHourly wageAnnual wage
10th percentile$36.00$74,880
25th percentile$40.18$83,570
Median$47.16$98,100
75th percentile$52.16$108,480
90th percentile$60.60$126,050

Use the lower and upper quartiles to understand the spread of wages, but do not label them “new graduate,” “five years,” and “ten years.” BLS does not report those experience bands here. An experienced hygienist in a lower-paying market can earn less than a new graduate in a higher-paying one.

For a first offer, collect three to five local advertisements with similar schedules and duties. Record the base rate, whether the rate is guaranteed, the benefits threshold, appointment lengths, and required experience. Separate an advertised maximum from what the employer is offering you.

A current primary-employer example shows why this matters. The University of Florida Wildlight Dental Clinic posting in Yulee lists $40–$45 an hour for a part-time Dental Hygienist II and requires two years of licensed clinical experience. Its general benefits description quotes leave accruals based on full-time employment. A part-time applicant should confirm their own eligibility and prorated entitlements rather than assume the full-time package applies.

Best and Worst States for Dental Hygienist Pay

Alaska has the highest published state median in the May 2025 download, while Alabama has the lowest. “Best” and “worst” in this section refer only to nominal wage rates. Housing, available hours, licensing, and the size of the local job market can change which offer works best for you.

Highest Paying States

StateAnnual medianHourly medianEstimated jobs
Alaska$132,690$63.79790
Washington$131,160$63.066,330
California$124,930$60.0624,500
Oregon$122,080$58.693,600
Nevada$115,290$55.431,510

Alaska’s estimate covers about 790 jobs, compared with 24,500 in California. A high wage in a small market does not establish that a suitable vacancy exists. Washington’s median exceeds California’s in this dataset; rankings based on mean wages or another year may differ.

Lowest Paying States

StateAnnual medianHourly medianEstimated jobs
Alabama$61,160$29.413,170
Mississippi$67,280$32.351,140
West Virginia$73,840$35.501,250
Kentucky$78,830$37.902,070
Pennsylvania$80,610$38.767,970

The Alaska–Alabama annual median difference is $71,530. That is a comparison between state wage distributions, not a guaranteed raise for relocating. Alabama also has a distinctive board-run training route, discussed below, so investigate education and license portability alongside pay.

Large Markets Worth Comparing

StateAnnual medianHourly medianEstimated jobs
Texas$99,240$47.7116,380
Florida$91,980$44.2211,980
New York$106,130$51.0313,660

The District of Columbia is separate from the 50-state ranking. Its published median is $137,220 annually or $65.97 hourly, with an estimated 320 jobs. Kansas has no dental-hygienist row in the current state download reviewed here. The full appendix includes Kansas with an unavailable marker rather than an older or invented wage.

Compare Living Costs Before Moving

A state salary table cannot tell you what remains after rent, childcare, insurance, commuting, and taxes. Compare actual offers in the cities where you could work. Use your expected paid hours and obtain housing quotes before treating a state pay difference as money available to spend.

Hypothetical relocation comparisonCurrent offerNew offer
Hourly rate$45$55
Paid schedule32 hours × 48 weeks32 hours × 48 weeks
Annual gross wages$69,120$84,480
Annual gross increase—$15,360
Additional housing at $900 monthly—$10,800 annually
Increase left before other changes—$4,560

The final line still precedes taxes, moving costs, benefit differences, and other expenses. For a household budget, keep recurring commitments such as rent in your fixed expenses, and model commuting and other variable expenses using the new location. An extra hour driving on each workday also has a practical cost even when you do not assign it a dollar value.

Permanent Jobs Temp Work and Production Pay

Compare guaranteed annual wages first, then benefits and costs. A permanent role can offer predictable pay and a familiar workflow. Temping can offer schedule choice and a higher daily rate, but availability, cancellations, travel, and eligibility for benefits vary by employer or agency.

Hypothetical annual comparisonOffer A permanentOffer B temporary
Hourly rate$50$58
Paid hours per week3228
Paid weeks per year5046
Annual gross wages$80,000$74,704
Annual job expenses$1,000$2,500
Personal cost to replace missing benefits$0$6,500
Wages less those two costs$79,000$65,704

These assumptions make Offer A $13,296 better on this limited, pre-tax comparison. The $6,500 is a hypothetical personal replacement cost, not the market value of every benefits package. It excludes taxes and any deductions, subsidies, or tax treatment of insurance. Enter costs that apply to your household.

Offer B needs about $62.11 an hour to match Offer A’s $80,000 gross at 28 hours for 46 weeks. It needs about $68.32 to match $79,000 after subtracting its assumed $9,000 of annual job and benefit replacement costs. This is why a higher hourly rate can still produce a weaker offer.

Read a Production Formula Before Accepting It

Ask whether production means fees billed, adjusted production, or money collected. Identify which procedures count, how refunds and insurer adjustments are handled, when payment occurs, and whether a guaranteed base remains in force. A plan paying the greater of base wages or a production percentage differs from one adding a bonus above a threshold.

For illustration, a guaranteed $400 day compared with 30% of eligible production yields $450 when eligible production is $1,500, but the guarantee remains $400 when production is $1,000. In a separate “base plus bonus” design, $400 plus 10% of production above $1,500 yields $450 on a $2,000 day. These are sample formulas, not industry standards. Ask the employer to work through a real anonymized pay period with you.

Check the Employment Relationship

A temporary assignment can be employee work. A 1099 label alone does not settle classification. The IRS considers behavioral control, financial control, and the relationship between the parties for federal employment-tax purposes. State rules can differ. Clarify who employs and pays you, insurance responsibilities, cancellation terms, and relevant tax obligations before comparing an employee rate with a contractor rate.

What Real Dental Hygienists Report

The following public accounts illustrate questions worth asking. Anonymous contributors’ identity, credentials, hours, and pay were not independently verified. Their figures do not establish typical local salaries, and these were not IncomeBunny interviews.

In a January 2026 salary discussion, one contributor described $50 an hour for single-column hygiene and $65 for assisted, double-column work. They reported two days of each schedule and asked about a $5 raise. The practical point is to compare workload and support along with rate; the post does not establish that all higher-rate jobs have the same appointment demands.

In a February 2026 discussion about working three days a week, a New York City contributor reported $55 an hour plus commission at their regular office, health insurance and paid leave, and temp rates of $60 or more on other days. The account illustrates why “part-time” does not automatically mean “no benefits.” Confirm the actual employer’s rules.

A May 2026 discussion of salaried work described predictable pay when appointments were cancelled, alongside pressure to work an extra day after gaps in the schedule. Ask how a fixed salary translates into expected hours, makeup days, and paid leave. Do not assume every salaried arrangement offers the same protection or conditions.

A named student account adds a different perspective. A December 2025 PCC profile of Kristina Hsu describes a second-year dental hygiene student and parent gaining clinical experience through community work in Saint Lucia. She reported greater clinical confidence from the experience. This is a training story, not salary evidence. Ask prospective programs how supervised clinical experience fits around family commitments and your work schedule.

How Much Dental Hygiene School Costs

Compare the cost of reaching licensure, including prerequisites and periods when you cannot work your usual hours. Tuition alone can omit instruments, loupes, uniforms, clinical fees, examinations, applications, travel, and living expenses.

School and published estimateListed amountImportant scope
Pima Community College 2026–27$26,693In-state program estimate, including listed supplies and a $2,500 credential allowance. The college says this is not every cost of attendance.
NHTI published program estimate$27,579 in-state; $51,234 out-of-state83-credit program calculation. Its fee page identifies 2025–26 rates; obtain a quote for your cohort and confirm clinical surcharges and living costs.
Portland Community College cost pageConflicting totalsThe introductory estimate says $23,000–$25,000, while its detailed table lists $35,368+. Do not budget from either total without a corrected, dated quote.

These examples were checked October 21, 2026 and are not a cheapest-program ranking. The amounts have different scopes and dates. Pima’s total does not include a complete household living budget; NHTI’s posted tuition reference is older than the Pima estimate. The PCC inconsistency shows why a search snippet or headline cost can be insufficient.

Before paying a deposit, ask for an itemized estimate for your residency status and entering class. Confirm whether it includes prerequisite courses, replacement instruments, current exam fees, remedial or repeat clinical work, and travel to clinical sites. Ask how often admission is offered and whether an unsuccessful application delays entry by a year.

Calculate the Cost of Time Away from Work

Suppose you pay $30,000 in direct education costs and lose $20,000 of earnings while studying. That is $50,000 before interest or additional living costs. If your new role improves annual earnings by $20,000, simple pre-tax payback is 2.5 years after starting work. At a $10,000 improvement, it is five years. This calculation ignores financing and changes in hours, so use it as a first comparison, not a loan repayment plan.

Ordinary living costs you would pay regardless should not all be called an extra education cost. Include the additional costs caused by studying, and keep a separate cash budget for the full amount you must fund. This is an application of opportunity cost: earnings you give up belong in the decision even when the school never invoices them.

Training Licensing and Working in Another State

The usual route involves a dental hygiene qualification, required examinations, and a state license. Prerequisites and clinical training can make the elapsed time longer than a program’s two academic years. Use the CODA program finder to check accreditation and the ADHA state licensure maps to reach the relevant board’s current requirements.

  1. Identify the states where you want to practice before choosing a program. Ask each board whether the program and examination route satisfy its requirements.
  2. Check prerequisites, admissions criteria, clinical attendance, completion rates, and first-attempt licensing-exam results with the program.
  3. Budget for national and accepted clinical examinations, state applications, background checks, and any additional required credentials or permits.
  4. Check continuing education, renewal costs, and employer requirements once licensed. Confirm permissions for particular duties rather than assuming another state’s scope transfers.

The JCNDE NBDHE page says updated test specifications are scheduled for November 2026. Candidates testing around that date should use the candidate guide applicable to their appointment. Passing the national examination is part of the process; it is not by itself a state license.

Alabama is an important exception to a universal college-route description. Its board offers the Alabama Dental Hygiene Program, with a listed $3,850 program cost. This is not a generally available $3,850 substitute for a college program. Its entry rules include substantial recent dental-assisting experience and a sponsoring-dentist requirement. Check portability with another state’s board before choosing it for an interstate career.

For an interstate move, verify the destination board’s exam or credentials route and processing times before resigning or booking temporary work. A state joining the Dentist and Dental Hygienist Compact does not itself give you permission to practice there. Check current application availability, individual eligibility, and the privilege needed for the destination state.

Further Education and Dental Hygienist Pay

A bachelor’s degree can help you meet requirements for particular education, research, or leadership roles. It does not create a national automatic clinical pay increase. Ask which jobs require the credential, what they pay, and whether you want their duties before borrowing for a completion program.

For example, a Yeshiva University faculty hygienist advertisement posted July 28, 2026 lists $85,000–$90,000 and requires a bachelor’s in dental hygiene or allied health sciences plus seven to ten years of hygiene experience. It combines clinical work with educational responsibilities. This one advertisement is not a national faculty salary estimate, but it shows that a role requiring more education need not exceed the national clinical wage benchmark.

If a completion program costs $15,000 and a specific available job pays $2 more an hour for 32 hours over 50 paid weeks, the annual gross gain is $3,200. Simple payback is about 4.7 years before interest, taxes, and time costs. With no confirmed pay increase, there is no wage-based payback to calculate; evaluate access to the work itself.

Dental Hygienist Pay in the US Canada England and Australia

Compare the figures in their own currencies and read the basis column. Converting everything into US dollars would not make these different job groups, schedules, and measures equivalent. Registration costs, work authorization, and time waiting to start work also affect an international move.

Sources: Canada Job Bank wages, England National Careers Service, and Jobs and Skills Australia’s specific occupation profile.

Canada’s national reference hides substantial regional variation: Job Bank lists hourly medians of C$60 in Alberta, C$55 in British Columbia, C$44 in Ontario, and C$39 in Quebec. These are the same broader occupation group, not guaranteed offers to an internationally trained applicant. Check the provincial or territorial registration requirements before planning a move.

In England, distinguish an employed salary from a self-employed sessional rate. Confirm whether private-practice hours, patient cancellations, leave, and professional indemnity are included. The National Careers Service identifies a General Dental Council approved qualification and GDC registration as requirements.

Australian listings can combine hygiene with oral health therapy. A Queensland Health oral health therapist advertisement, for example, lists A$83,824–A$120,740 full-time base salary, with employer superannuation and leave loading separately described. Its duties include adult hygiene and paediatric therapy. This is a related-role comparator, not an Australian dental-hygienist national median. Confirm the registration category, duties, paid hours, and whether any quoted package includes superannuation.

Source: the same May 2025 BLS national download, using a separate occupation code for each row. These are wage-rate comparisons; they do not adjust for weekly hours, shift premiums, benefits, tuition, or clinical workload. The relatively close nurse and hygienist medians do not establish equal annual take-home pay.

A dental-assisting background can help you understand the setting, but becoming a hygienist requires its own education and licensing route. Choose between imaging, nursing, and hygiene by comparing actual schedules, physical demands, patient care, and total training costs alongside salary.

For a closer comparison with imaging careers, see our ultrasound tech salary guide and radiology tech salary guide. Both examine state wages, training costs, and job schedules so you can compare more than the national median.

Questions to Ask Before Accepting an Offer

  • What hourly rate or salary is guaranteed, and which bonuses depend on collections, production, or attendance?
  • How many paid hours are expected each week, and what happens when a patient cancels or the dentist takes leave?
  • Are setup, sterilization, notes, meetings, and any required training included in recorded paid time?
  • What hours qualify me for insurance, retirement contributions, paid leave, and other benefits? What will my own deductions be?
  • How long are routine and periodontal appointments, how is new-patient work scheduled, and is the role single-column or assisted hygiene?
  • What assistant support, breaks, equipment adjustments, and ergonomic assessment are available? Can I observe a typical clinic session?
  • Who pays for licensing, continuing education, instruments, professional liability cover, and any required credentials?
  • What are the written terms for a signing bonus, training repayment, resignation, outside temp work, and restrictions after leaving?

For negotiation, make a specific request tied to comparable local offers and the proposed schedule: “For these duties and 32 paid hours a week, I am seeking $52 an hour. Could we confirm cancellation pay, benefits eligibility, and a written review after 90 days?” At $2 more per hour for 32 hours across 50 paid weeks, the annual gross difference is $3,200.

Demand can help negotiations without guaranteeing a particular result. The ADA’s April 2026 workforce analysis reports that 91% of dentists actively or recently recruiting hygienists found it very or extremely challenging. That is a survey of recruiting dentists, not 91% of all practices or proof that every market pays above its state median.

Compare Two Dental Hygienist Job Offers

To compare two hourly offers, record the hourly rate, paid hours per week, paid weeks per year, job expenses, and your personal cost of replacing missing benefits. Use the worked examples above to calculate annual gross wages and wages less those entered costs.

Keep paid weeks separate from weeks actually worked: for example, 50 paid weeks may include 48 worked weeks and two weeks of paid leave. For irregular temporary work, calculate both an expected-booking scenario and a lower-booking scenario. These simple comparisons exclude taxes, loan payments, production bonuses, and legal classification decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Does a Dental Hygienist Make an Hour?

The US median is $47.16 an hour in May 2025 BLS data. State and city wages differ substantially, and a local offer also depends on duties, hours, and benefits.

Can a Dental Hygienist Make Six Figures?

Yes, but calculate the paid time required. At $60 an hour, 32 hours for 48 paid weeks produces $92,160. Reaching $100,000 on that schedule requires approximately $65.10 an hour before bonuses. A six-figure annualized state median does not mean every part-time worker receives six figures.

How Much Can You Make Working Three Days a Week?

With three paid eight-hour days for 48 weeks, $45 an hour produces $51,840, $50 produces $57,600, and $60 produces $69,120 before taxes. Shorter days, cancellations, extra shifts, and paid leave change the result.

Which State Pays Dental Hygienists the Most?

Alaska has the highest published state median in the download reviewed, at $132,690 annually or $63.79 hourly. The District of Columbia is higher but is not a state. Kansas has no current row in this download.

Does Part Time Dental Hygiene Include Benefits?

Sometimes. Ask the employer about the minimum hours, waiting period, contribution amounts, and any prorated leave. Neither a part-time title nor a general benefits paragraph establishes your own entitlement.

Is Dental Hygiene School Worth the Cost?

Compare the complete cost of reaching licensure and earnings you give up with the increase from a realistic local paid schedule. Check completion and exam results, observe the work, and test whether the budget still works with fewer paid hours.

Is the Published Annual Salary Take Home Pay?

No. BLS wages are gross, and its annual measure does not represent your personal tax bill, benefit deductions, or actual yearly hours. Use expected annual gross divided by 12 only as a pre-tax monthly average.

Sources and Salary Comparison Method

National wages, percentiles, state rankings, and career comparisons come from the May 2025 national download and May 2025 state download. State rows use SOC 29-1292 and rank annual medians among the 49 states with published rows. Kansas is marked unavailable; DC is reported separately. Estimated employment is a count of jobs in the survey measure, not current vacancies.

Employer advertisements and school pages are examples checked October 21, 2026 and can change or close. International references use the source years and occupational scope stated above. Anonymous accounts illustrate decisions rather than representative pay evidence. All worked offers, relocation budgets, production formulas, and payback scenarios are explicitly hypothetical. Calculations use unrounded inputs where available and round displayed results for readability.
