Surgical technologists earn a median of $64,650 a year, or $31.08 an hour, in the United States. That is the latest national wage estimate available for this guide, covering May 2025. Your first offer may be lower, and a higher hourly rate can still produce less annual income if the job offers fewer paid hours.

This guide helps you work out what you could earn, where that income may go further, what training will actually cost, and which questions to ask before accepting a staff, PRN, or travel position. It includes all 50 states, published college costs, firsthand worker accounts, and carefully matched comparisons with Canada, England, and Australia.

Average annual pay$68,710
Middle 50 percent of annual wages$54,690 to $79,750
90th percentile annual wage$96,940

Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, occupation 29-2055. Median means half of workers earned more and half earned less. The average is higher because high earners pull it upward.

The BLS measure is straight-time gross pay. It excludes overtime premiums, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, and employer benefit costs. A worker's total compensation can therefore differ substantially from these figures. See the OEWS technical notes.

Which Surgical Job Are You Comparing

Surgical tech, scrub tech, and surgical technologist commonly describe the occupation covered here. These workers help prepare the operating room and sterile supplies, pass instruments, and support the surgical team. Actual permitted duties depend on law, employer policy, training, and supervision.

A surgical first assistant is a different role with different responsibilities. A circulating registered nurse is also a separate licensed profession. Sterile processing technicians focus on instrument decontamination, preparation, and sterilization. A salary page that combines these jobs can give you the wrong benchmark.

The BLS median for surgical assistants was $66,800 in May 2025, compared with $64,650 for surgical technologists. Neither figure establishes the pay premium for a particular first-assist credential. Check the actual job description and authorized duties before comparing offers.

Starting Pay and Experienced Surgical Tech Earnings

There is no official national new graduate salary in the BLS data. Its percentiles describe the entire workforce, including people in different states, specialties, and work settings. They are useful reference points for an offer, but they do not correspond to a set number of years of experience.

Wage distributionHourly wageAnnual wage
10th percentile$22.09$45,940
25th percentile$26.29$54,690
Median$31.08$64,650
75th percentile$38.34$79,750
90th percentile$46.61$96,940

For a first job, collect at least five recent local postings and ask each employer for the new graduate starting rate, orientation rate, certification increase, and first review date. Confirm whether past healthcare experience earns credit on its pay scale. Compare base rates before adding optional overtime or call income.

For an experienced role, bring evidence of the work you can do independently: specialties covered, equipment familiarity, precepting, service-line responsibilities, and recent relevant experience. Ask whether the organization has a formal clinical ladder or fixed pay steps. A specialty may improve your negotiating position, but the national data do not establish a guaranteed dollar premium for orthopedics, cardiac surgery, robotics, or another specialty.

A Real Posting Shows Why Hours Matter

A Mayo Clinic surgical technologist posting in Red Wing, Minnesota, posted August 20, 2026, advertised $32.43 to $48.66 an hour, benefits eligibility, and 64 hours per pay period. It also specified possible call with a 30-minute response time and possible travel between sites.

That advertised range covers a position, rather than promising a new graduate its upper rate. Ask how long the pay period is and how many hours are guaranteed. If 64 hours covers two weeks, it averages 32 hours weekly. At $32.43, 32 paid hours for 52 weeks would produce about $53,964, compared with about $67,454 at 40 hours. These are calculations under stated assumptions, not earnings promised by the employer.

Best and Worst States for Surgical Tech Pay

The following rankings use median annual wages from the same May 2025 BLS dataset. Highest and lowest pay do not establish the best and worst places to live or work. They also do not rank program quality, working conditions, or job availability.

States with the Highest Median Wages

StateAnnual medianHourly medianEstimated employment
Hawaii$82,640$39.73290
Oregon$81,390$39.131,090
California$81,310$39.0911,920
Massachusetts$80,870$38.882,220
Alaska$80,380$38.65310

Hawaii leads by median wage, but its estimated workforce is only 290 surgical technologists. California has about 11,920, creating a much larger market to investigate. Employment estimates measure existing jobs, rather than current vacancies. Small markets and survey uncertainty can make close rankings less stable.

Minnesota, with an $80,210 median, and Connecticut, at $79,890, are also worth comparing with local offers. A statewide number still hides differences between cities, rural hospitals, and individual employers.

States with the Lowest Median Wages

StateAnnual medianHourly medianEstimated employment
West Virginia$49,110$23.61580
Alabama$49,420$23.762,480
Mississippi$49,810$23.951,110
New Mexico$51,780$24.90540
Louisiana$57,370$27.582,230

A low statewide median is a reason to examine training debt and local starting offers carefully. It does not mean every employer pays that rate, or that moving will improve your finances after housing, transport, and family costs.

Large Markets That Many Applicants Compare

StateAnnual medianHourly medianEstimated employment
Texas$65,220$31.3510,160
Florida$62,440$30.029,120
New York$79,550$38.256,540

Texas, Florida, and New York illustrate why employer choice matters alongside state choice. Compare the particular commuting area, the number of employers within it, the posted wage range, and the hours offered. The complete 50-state table is at the end of this guide.

Where Surgical Tech Pay May Go Further

To compare purchasing power, we divided selected states' 2025 median wages by their 2024 Bureau of Economic Analysis regional price parities. An index of 100 equals the national price level; 110 means an overall price level about 10 percent higher.

State2025 median wage2024 price indexIllustrative price-adjusted equivalent
California$81,310110.7$73,500
Hawaii$82,640110.0$75,100
New Jersey$77,200108.8$71,000
Iowa$60,54087.8$69,000
Oklahoma$61,19087.8$69,700
Arkansas$57,40086.9$66,100
Mississippi$49,81087.0$57,300

Method: wage ÷ (price index ÷ 100), rounded to the nearest $100. This is our illustration using adjacent data years, rather than an official real-wage ranking. It does not account for income taxes, household size, your actual rent, or benefits, and it covers only the selected states.

For example, Oklahoma's $61,190 nominal median becomes roughly $69,700 at the national price level. California's $81,310 becomes roughly $73,500. That narrows a $20,120 nominal gap considerably, although it does not establish that either state is better for your household.

Before moving, get three realistic housing quotes near the employer, estimate parking and commuting costs, and confirm whether call rules require you to live nearby. Add moving costs and the cost of a second household income changing. Keep your recurring fixed expenses separate from variable expenses so you can see which costs will actually change.

Relocation example: an extra $8,000 in annual gross pay is outweighed by rent that rises $800 a month, or $9,600 a year, even before moving costs and any tax differences. Use a monthly budget before accepting the headline raise.

Hospital and Surgery Center Pay

BLS reported these May 2025 industry medians specifically for surgical technologists in its Occupational Outlook Handbook.

Work settingMedian annual wage
Hospitals including public and private facilities$65,020
Outpatient care centers$64,670
Physician offices$64,590
Administrative and support services$62,400
Dentist offices$48,190

These broad categories cannot tell you whether a particular hospital or ambulatory surgery center is the better offer. Ask about case mix, overtime, call frequency, scheduled hours, cancellations, and benefits. A surgery center may offer hours that suit your household; confirm them instead of assuming the job always finishes on time.

BLS projects 5 percent employment growth for surgical technologists from 2025 to 2035. National growth is useful context, but local hiring and the availability of training placements still determine your immediate opportunities.

Staff PRN and Travel Surgical Tech Pay

Compare the same period of work and keep wages, reimbursements, and benefits separate. PRN generally means working as needed. A higher PRN rate may come with fewer guaranteed hours or different benefits. Travel packages can include both taxable wages and expense reimbursements.

Pay arrangementWhat to calculateWhat to confirm
StaffBase rate × paid hours × paid weeksGuaranteed hours, paid leave, benefits cost, call expectations, and pay steps
PRN or per diemRate × realistically available shiftsCancellation policy, minimum availability, benefit eligibility, and orientation pay
Travel contractTaxable wages and reimbursements for weeks actually workedGuaranteed hours, housing costs, assignment gaps, benefit continuity, and repayment clauses

Why a Higher PRN Rate Can Produce Less Income

In a hypothetical comparison, $42 an hour for 24 hours a week over 48 weeks produces $48,384. A staff role at $31 an hour for 40 paid hours over 52 weeks produces $64,480. The staff role provides $16,096 more gross cash before valuing benefits. Substitute the hours you can actually obtain rather than annualizing an occasional busy week.

A Travel Package After Extra Assignment Costs

Illustrative annual cash comparisonStaff exampleTravel example
Assumed rate and paid period$34/hour × 40 hours × 52 weeks$2,200 weekly package × 46 weeks
Annual wages or package receipts$70,720$101,200
Additional assignment housing$0−$18,000
Budget for replacing benefits$0 incremental allowance−$6,000
Additional assignment travel$0−$1,500
Cash remaining before taxes and other deductions$70,720$75,700

All figures are hypothetical. The travel package includes any reimbursements, so it is not equivalent to a taxable annual salary. This illustration subtracts only the listed incremental costs. It omits ordinary household expenses, staff payroll deductions, and employer retirement contributions. Actual tax treatment and benefit costs can change the result.

Do not assume every stipend is tax free because a recruiter describes it that way. Tax-home and temporary-assignment rules matter; the IRS explanation of business travel expenses is a starting point for reviewing your situation with a qualified tax professional. Ask agencies for separate taxable wage, reimbursement, and overtime figures in writing.

Before choosing travel, confirm required recent experience, the specialties you must cover, orientation length, and expectations for working independently. Training graduation alone does not guarantee eligibility for a travel assignment.

What Real Surgical Techs Report

Public worker discussions help explain the questions behind salary statistics. The following accounts are anonymous, unverified self-reports from Reddit, not interviews conducted by IncomeBunny or evidence of a representative market rate. We link the original discussions so you can read their context.

They said they already earned $24 as a float patient care technician.Compare the new role with your existing pay and read the retention or repayment agreement before accepting sponsored training.
New graduate pay discussion
July 9 to 12, 2025
One Illinois commenter reported $29/hour plus a $2 evening differential. Another reported $36.50 as a new graduate in Minneapolis.Ask contributors and employers to separate base pay, differentials, location, and schedule. Two reported rates can describe very different offers.

These accounts also show why choosing a program on the strength of a national salary headline is risky. Obtain the employer's written starting scale and the school's complete costs before committing to training debt.

How Much Surgical Tech School Costs

Public colleges publish useful starting points, but their totals include different items. These are the schools' stated estimates, not quotes for every applicant. Residency, prerequisites, health requirements, financial aid, and clinical travel can change your cost.

Program and cost yearPublished estimateWhat the figure covers
Pima Community College in Arizona
2026–27
$10,094.06Estimated in-state program costs including listed tuition, fees, books, uniforms, and certain screening and CPR costs. Health insurance and some personal costs vary.
Lincoln Land Community College in Illinois
2026–27
$16,129.50Estimated in-district tuition, variable tuition, and fees for the two-year associate program. This is not a complete household cost of attendance.
Kirkwood Community College in Iowa
2026–27
$20,151The school's total estimate includes tuition and listed items such as clinical expenses, a required laptop, uniforms, and credentials.

Build Your Full Training Budget

Request an itemized quote covering prerequisites, tuition, mandatory fees, books, equipment, screening, immunization documentation, CPR, exams, and credential renewals. Add clinical travel, parking, childcare, and income you will lose when class or placement hours conflict with work.

Ask whether financial aid applies to the exact program, whether employer support must be repaid if you leave, and whether the school guarantees a clinical placement. Get the timetable and placement radius in writing. A low advertised course price has limited value if you cannot complete its required clinical training.

A Simple Training Payback Calculation

Suppose your total investment is $32,000: $18,000 in direct education costs, $12,000 in lost earnings, and $2,000 in extra travel and childcare. You currently earn $20/hour. These hypothetical outcomes show how strongly your local starting wage affects the decision.

Assumed new hourly payAnnual gross increase at 40 hours and 52 paid weeksSimple payback on $32,000
$27$14,560About 26 months
$23$6,240About 62 months

Formula: total training investment ÷ annual earnings increase. These estimates exclude taxes, financing interest, future raises, benefit changes, and a delay finding work. Use paid hours you realistically expect, subtract grants you will actually receive, and compare with the pay you could earn by staying in your current career.

Training Certification and State Requirements

Plan the route backward from the employers where you want to work. BLS describes certificate and associate degree routes, but program length alone does not establish eligibility for a particular credential or job.

  1. Read five local job advertisements and record their required program accreditation, certification, registration, and experience.
  2. For the Certified Surgical Technologist credential, check NBSTSA CST eligibility. Its standard graduate route requires a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited surgical technology program; separate military provisions also exist. Verify your own eligibility directly.
  3. Confirm the exact program in the CAAHEP directory or with ABHES and the credentialing body. General college accreditation does not by itself establish that its surgical technology program meets your chosen exam's requirements.
  4. If considering the Tech in Surgery Certified credential, read NCCT TS-C eligibility and documentation requirements. It has its own pathways and competency documentation. Ask employers and the state whether that credential is accepted for your intended job.
  5. Check current state requirements and the employer's policy before paying a deposit. Passing an exam and holding state registration are separate steps where both apply.

For example, Washington requires surgical technologist registration. Its application page lists a $70 initial registration fee and $65 renewal fee, with annual renewal. New York law sets education and credential standards for covered facilities, with specified alternatives and exceptions, and requires annual continuing education. Read the applicable rule in full rather than assuming the requirements are identical across states.

Before enrolling, ask for recent completion, credential-exam pass, and job-placement outcomes, with cohort size and the school's definition of placement. Ask whether prerequisites or a competitive admission cycle extend the advertised timeline. A paid hospital route can reduce lost income, but review its eligibility, accepted credential, clinical training, retention period, and repayment terms just as carefully.

This is one employer's WHA4 and WHA5 classification example, not a national median or a direct US role match. Classification depends on appointment.

Canada: Job Bank identifies the nursing classification, and its wage table reports the pay reference above. Its requirements page describes practical nursing education and registration, plus additional operating room training. Do not assume a US CST credential substitutes for Canadian nursing registration.

England: a 2026 NHS ODP and theatre practitioner advertisement used Band 5. The 2026–27 England pay scale also sets Band 6 at £39,959 to £48,117. Appointment to a Band 6 post is different from progressing within Band 5. The National Careers Service describes a three-year degree route, and HCPC registration is required. Other UK nations have their own pay arrangements.

Australia: the SA Health advertisement included equipment setup, handling, and cleaning duties and a relevant Certificate III requirement. Its stated closing date was September 30, 2026; it is included as a dated pay example, not an open vacancy. Jobs and Skills Australia does not publish a median weekly earnings figure for this detailed occupation. Avoid presenting a broader occupation's earnings as a precise surgical tech salary.

For any international move, verify recognition of your training, permitted duties, work authorization, contract hours, local housing, pension or retirement arrangements, and health coverage before comparing currencies. Exchange rates alone cannot tell you which offer supports a better standard of living.

How to Compare and Negotiate a Surgical Tech Offer

How to Compare and Negotiate a Surgical Tech Offer
Compare guaranteed pay, paid hours, benefits, and assignment costs. AI-generated editorial illustration.

Ask the recruiter to complete the following information before you accept. Keep uncertain overtime, call income, and bonuses separate from guaranteed pay.

Offer detailWhat to request in writing
Base pay and scheduleHourly rate, guaranteed paid hours, paid weeks, and orientation rate
Extra payOvertime rules, shift differentials, call pay, and callback minimums
BenefitsHealth premiums, paid leave, retirement contributions, and credential reimbursement
Work expectationsSpecialties, orientation, case mix, call radius, and cancellation policy
Contract costsBonus repayment terms; for travel, housing, transport, and assignment gaps

Work Out Monthly Cash You Can Actually Use

At the national median, $64,650 divided by 12 is $5,387.50 in monthly gross pay. That is not a monthly deposit. Subtract estimated federal, state, and local withholding, payroll taxes, employee health premiums, retirement contributions, and other deductions. Use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator for applicable federal withholding, then account for state and local taxes separately.

From expected take-home pay, subtract rent or mortgage, utilities, transport, debt payments, food, childcare, and your savings target. Ask payroll for an illustrative benefits deduction statement if the premium or coverage is unclear. For a travel position, budget weeks between assignments and any continuing home expenses.

Use a Specific Negotiation Request

Adapt this example to facts you can document: “Thank you for the offer. Based on comparable local postings and my experience covering these service lines, I am seeking $34 an hour in base pay. Can you confirm the guaranteed hours, evening differential, and call policy? If the base rate is fixed, could we discuss a six-month pay review, credential reimbursement, or additional paid leave?”

Ask about experience credit or the clinical ladder when an employer uses fixed pay steps. Evaluate a sign-on bonus separately from recurring base pay, including its payment schedule and any repayment obligation. Get the final terms in writing.

Decide Whether the Work Fits Before You Enroll

Salary matters, but operating room work also involves prolonged standing, close attention to sterile technique, fast communication, and exposure to stressful situations. Hospital schedules may include nights, weekends, holidays, call, and long cases. Ask about the setting you would actually join.

Arrange an observation opportunity if a local facility permits it. Ask how new graduates are supported, how long orientation lasts, who covers breaks, how staff raise safety concerns, and how often employees stay late. Ask programs how clinical schedules and essential physical requirements are handled, including available accommodations.

Before paying for school, you should be able to name the credential you will qualify for, two realistic local employers, your full training cost, the starting wage you used in your budget, and the amount you could repay comfortably if your first offer is lower than expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Surgical Tech Make Six Figures

It is possible, but $100,000 exceeds the national 90th percentile straight-time wage of $96,940. High-paying locations, additional hours, differentials, or travel arrangements can change total receipts. Confirm whether a six-figure claim includes overtime, reimbursements, first-assist work, or a different occupation.

Does Certification Automatically Increase Pay

No uniform national certification raise is established by these data. Certification can be an entry requirement or an employer preference. Ask whether your employer provides a stated pay increase, reimburses the exam, or requires a particular credential to advance.

What Does a 36 Hour Week Pay

At $30/hour, 36 paid hours a week for 52 weeks produces $56,160. Forty paid hours produces $62,400. Confirm the schedule and paid weeks instead of treating every full-time job as 2,080 paid hours a year.

Can You Complete Surgical Tech Training Entirely Online

Before accepting an online program's claim, verify its supervised clinical requirements, placement arrangements, accepted accreditation, and your exact exam eligibility. Online classroom delivery by itself does not demonstrate that you can qualify for your intended credential or local job.

Which State Pays Surgical Techs the Most

Hawaii has the highest May 2025 state median at $82,640. California has a much larger estimated workforce and a median of $81,310. Compare local offers and living costs before deciding where to work.

Sources and How We Compared Pay

US national and state wage figures come from the BLS May 2025 OEWS downloadable files for surgical technologists, SOC 29-2055. State rankings use annual medians and include the 50 states, excluding the District of Columbia and territories. Employment is an estimate of jobs, not advertised vacancies. Hourly and annual figures are independently rounded in the source, so multiplying by 2,080 may differ slightly from a published annual wage.

The state price comparison uses BEA 2024 all-items regional price parities released in February 2026, the latest available at this update. International rows preserve the source's currency, reference period, occupation scope, and pay type. Worker accounts remain self-reports. Cost and payback examples are identified as calculations rather than observed outcomes.

  • BLS May 2025 national wage workbook and state wage workbook for the underlying figures.
  • BLS career outlook for the occupation and industry context.
  • BEA regional price parities for the purchasing-power method.
