Radiologic technologists and technicians earn a median of $80,110 a year, or $38.52 an hour, in the United States. MRI technologists have a separate median of $95,480. These are the latest BLS wage estimates available for this guide, covering May 2025. A new graduate’s offer can be substantially lower, and a higher hourly rate does not always mean more annual income.
Use this guide to compare local offers, check whether CT or MRI training is worth the investment, budget for school, and evaluate staff, PRN, and travel work. It includes all 50 states, firsthand worker accounts, selected international comparisons, and a job-offer worksheet you can copy or print.
Updated October 21, 2026. US wages are gross pay before taxes and deductions. Dollar amounts are US dollars unless marked C$ or A$.
Radiology Tech Salary at a Glance
| Pay measure | Latest national figure |
| Radiologic technologist and technician median | $80,110/year or $38.52/hour |
| Radiologic technologist and technician average | $83,840/year |
| Middle 50 percent of radiologic technologist wages | $64,810 to $98,750/year |
| MRI technologist median | $95,480/year or $45.91/hour |
| Monthly gross equivalent of the radiologic median | $6,675.83 before deductions |
Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025. Radiologic technologists and technicians are occupation 29-2034; MRI technologists are 29-2035. Median means half of workers earned more and half earned less. The average can be pulled upward by high earners.
These are straight-time gross wages. BLS excludes overtime premiums, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, and employer benefit costs, as explained in its technical notes. Do not compare this wage measure directly with a travel package that includes housing reimbursements.
X Ray CT and MRI Salary Differences
A modality is an imaging method, such as X-ray, computed tomography, or MRI. BLS groups radiologic technologists working in X-ray and CT within the same occupation. It does not publish a separate national CT median in this dataset. MRI is reported separately.
This matters when comparing salary pages. The $80,110 figure is not a pure X-ray-only average or a guaranteed CT salary. The BLS combined radiologic-and-MRI occupational family has another median, $81,390. Check the occupation and measure behind any headline before using it to negotiate.
For a comparison within one specialty survey, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists 2024 Wage and Salary Survey announcement reported the following average annual compensation by discipline.
| Discipline | ASRT 2024 reported average |
| Radiography | $73,274 |
| Computed tomography | $87,785 |
| Magnetic resonance imaging | $92,729 |
| Mammography | $88,468 |
ASRT surveyed its professional database and received 19,687 completed questionnaires, including 18,158 respondents employed in the radiologic sciences. These are survey means from 2024, rather than BLS medians from 2025. Differences also reflect location, experience, employers, and responsibilities. The gap between two survey averages is not the raise an individual automatically receives after earning another credential.
A radiologic technologist is also different from a radiologist, who is a physician. Limited-scope X-ray work, radiology assisting, radiation therapy, and sonography have different training or duties. Ask exactly which role a school prepares you for and which jobs accept that qualification.

Starting Pay and Experienced Radiology Tech Earnings
BLS does not identify a national new graduate starting salary. Its percentiles describe workers across locations, experience levels, and work settings. Use the lower percentiles as context for an offer, without labeling them as a guaranteed entry wage.
| Wage distribution | Hourly wage | Annual wage |
| 10th percentile | $26.91 | $55,980 |
| 25th percentile | $31.16 | $64,810 |
| Median | $38.52 | $80,110 |
| 75th percentile | $47.47 | $98,750 |
| 90th percentile | $57.05 | $118,660 |
For your first job, collect at least five current local advertisements and record their base rates, schedules, credential requirements, orientation pay, and benefits. Ask recruiters for the actual new graduate pay step and whether previous patient-care experience earns credit. A range’s top rate usually requires more than meeting the minimum application requirements.
Two Published Offers Illustrate the Difference
| Employer example | Advertised rate and arrangement | What to clarify |
| Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville Florida Posted June 2, 2026 | $28.80 to $43.25/hour. The posting welcomes new graduates, lists benefits eligibility and 80 hours per pay period, and describes a three-level career ladder. | The actual starting step, exact position and shift, pay-period length, and criteria for moving between levels. |
| Community Memorial in Ojai California Job 2026-11998 | $41.95 to $57.78/hour for a new graduate per diem position, with variable eight-hour shifts. | Available shifts, cancellation rules, PRN pay terms, and benefits. The employer says new hires are most often placed below the range midpoint. |
These are dated employer examples checked for this update, rather than a list of guaranteed vacancies or offers. California’s higher hourly range cannot establish that the per diem job produces more annual income than a staff role with predictable hours.
For an experienced position, document the modalities you can perform independently, recent relevant experience, shifts covered, precepting, and any service-line responsibilities. Ask how those responsibilities map to the employer’s pay grades. Avoid assuming that a credential brings a raise unless the pay policy or offer states it.
Best and Worst States for Radiology Tech Pay
These rankings use the same May 2025 BLS occupation, 29-2034, and sort states by median annual wage. They cover the radiologic technologist and technician workforce, including CT, while excluding the separately reported MRI occupation. Highest and lowest pay do not rank working conditions, program quality, or household affordability.
States with the Highest Median Wages
| State | Annual median | Hourly median | Estimated employment |
| California | $121,260 | $58.30 | 20,900 |
| Massachusetts | $103,620 | $49.82 | 5,500 |
| Oregon | $102,290 | $49.18 | 2,700 |
| Washington | $102,090 | $49.08 | 4,130 |
| Hawaii | $101,700 | $48.89 | 690 |
California has the highest median at $121,260 and an estimated 20,900 jobs. Its market is much larger than Hawaii’s estimated 690 jobs. Existing employment is not the number of vacancies, and statewide wages can hide large differences between particular cities and employers.
States with the Lowest Median Wages
| State | Annual median | Hourly median | Estimated employment |
| Mississippi | $59,300 | $28.51 | 2,510 |
| Alabama | $60,700 | $29.18 | 3,500 |
| Arkansas | $63,640 | $30.60 | 2,210 |
| Louisiana | $63,680 | $30.61 | 3,370 |
| Tennessee | $64,630 | $31.07 | 4,660 |
In a lower-paying market, the return on a costly program may be much smaller than a national salary headline suggests. Ask schools for local placement outcomes and employers for actual starting pay before setting your borrowing budget.
Large Markets Worth Comparing
| State | Annual median | Hourly median | Estimated employment |
| Texas | $78,630 | $37.80 | 20,250 |
| Florida | $76,750 | $36.90 | 16,470 |
| New York | $98,470 | $47.34 | 13,450 |
Texas, Florida, and New York have substantial existing workforces, but an individual hospital’s schedule and pay steps still matter. Compare employers within a realistic commuting area. The full 50-state reference table at the end includes annual and hourly medians and estimated employment.
Compare Pay with Living Costs Before Moving
A higher wage needs to cover the costs that change when you move. For a broad comparison, we divided selected states’ 2025 median wages by their 2024 Bureau of Economic Analysis regional price parities. The national price level equals 100.
| State | 2025 median wage | 2024 price index | Illustrative price-adjusted equivalent |
| California | $121,260 | 110.7 | $109,500 |
| Hawaii | $101,700 | 110.0 | $92,500 |
| New Jersey | $95,000 | 108.8 | $87,300 |
| Iowa | $65,930 | 87.8 | $75,100 |
| Oklahoma | $74,160 | 87.8 | $84,500 |
| Arkansas | $63,640 | 86.9 | $73,200 |
| Mississippi | $59,300 | 87.0 | $68,200 |
Calculation: annual wage ÷ (price index ÷ 100), rounded to the nearest $100. This is an illustration using adjacent data years, rather than an official real-wage ranking. It covers selected states and excludes individual tax circumstances, benefits, and your actual housing costs.
California’s nominal median exceeds Oklahoma’s by $47,100. The illustrative price adjustment reduces the gap to about $25,000. That is still substantial, but neither number tells you the rent, commuting costs, or available hours attached to a particular offer.
Get realistic housing quotes near the employer, then add parking, transport, childcare, insurance changes, and moving costs. Call-response rules can limit where you live. If the move changes a partner’s earnings, include that loss or gain too.
Keep fixed expenses separate from variable expenses when building the budget. A $12,000 annual gross raise is already consumed by rent that rises $1,000 a month, before tax differences or moving expenses.
Hospital Outpatient and Travel Radiology Tech Pay
The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook reports these industry medians for radiologic technologists and technicians in May 2025. MRI has separate industry statistics.
| Work setting | Median annual wage |
| Federal government excluding postal service | $97,490 |
| Outpatient care centers | $84,720 |
| Hospitals including public and private facilities | $80,650 |
| Medical and diagnostic laboratories | $78,400 |
| Physician offices | $74,540 |
These broad industry categories do not establish that a particular outpatient center pays more than a hospital. Compare case mix, shifts, staffing, workload, paid leave, and benefits alongside the rate. Confirm evening and weekend expectations even when a position is advertised as outpatient.
Staff and PRN Annual Income
PRN generally means working as needed. In a hypothetical comparison, $45/hour for 24 hours a week over 48 weeks produces $51,840. A staff role at $36/hour for 40 paid hours over 52 weeks produces $74,880. The staff role produces $23,040 more gross cash before comparing benefits.
Use the hours you can reasonably obtain, and ask whether low census, cancellations, or minimum shift commitments affect your schedule. Count differentials only for the hours that qualify. Ask payroll what triggers overtime and how the applicable pay rules are calculated.
Travel Pay After Assignment Costs
| Hypothetical annual comparison | Staff example | Travel example |
| Assumed rate and paid period | $39/hour × 40 hours × 52 weeks | $2,600 weekly package × 44 weeks |
| Annual wages or package receipts | $81,120 | $114,400 |
| Additional assignment housing | $0 | −$24,000 |
| Budget for replacing benefits | $0 incremental allowance | −$6,500 |
| Additional assignment travel | $0 | −$2,000 |
| Cash remaining before taxes and other deductions | $81,120 | $81,900 |
The travel package may include both taxable wages and reimbursements, so its receipts are not equivalent to a taxable salary. This example subtracts only the listed incremental costs. It excludes ordinary household spending, staff payroll deductions, and employer retirement contributions. Tax treatment can change the comparison substantially.
Get a written breakdown of taxable pay, reimbursements, guaranteed hours, cancellation rules, overtime, benefit coverage between assignments, and any repayment obligations. Review tax-home and temporary-assignment questions using the IRS business travel guidance and qualified advice for your circumstances. A recruiter calling a payment a stipend does not establish its tax treatment.
Also confirm the required recent experience and exact modality. A travel MRI, CT, or interventional job is not interchangeable with a general radiography assignment. Do not build an education repayment plan around a high-paying travel listing you are not yet qualified to accept.
What Real Radiology Techs Report
The following public Reddit discussions help explain questions to ask, but they are anonymous, unverified self-reports. IncomeBunny did not interview these contributors or verify their payroll records. Their accounts are not a representative salary survey.
| Discussion and date | Reported experience | What a reader can check |
| Pay transparency September 30, 2026 | A commenter identifying as a new graduate reported starting at $26/hour and moving to $28 after a few months. Their location was not specified in the account reviewed here. | Ask about the orientation rate and review schedule. A pay figure without location and shift details is an incomplete benchmark. |
| New graduate pay discussion August 26, 2025 | A Minneapolis-area commenter reported $34 to $37/hour for hospital work and $30 to $32 for clinic work. | Compare actual employers and benefits in the same commuting area. Industry medians cannot settle every local comparison. |
| CT training after graduation March 11, 2026 | A second-year student reported receiving an offer to begin in X-ray and start CT training within a few months. They were uncertain about moving into CT so early. | Ask about supervised training, competency assessment, protected learning time, and support before taking independent assignments. |
Use these stories to improve your questions. Obtain the employer’s own written pay scale and training agreement before committing to a job or course.
Is CT or MRI Training Worth the Cost

A second modality can broaden the jobs you can apply for, but the financial value depends on the offer you can obtain afterward. Compare the full investment with a documented pay change, including any change in paid hours or benefits.
Example: assume CT training, exam-related expenses, and lost income total $4,800. If the confirmed raise is $3/hour for 36 paid hours a week over 50 weeks, the annual gross increase is $5,400. Simple payback is about 11 months after the higher pay begins. This hypothetical calculation excludes taxes, financing costs, benefit changes, and time before a suitable job becomes available.
If completing the credential brings no raise and no new role, there is no earnings increase to repay the investment in that calculation. Ask whether an employer-paid route is available and read any retention or repayment agreement.
What the CT Credential Actually Requires
ARRT offers CT through its postprimary pathway. It requires an eligible supporting credential, ethics compliance, structured education, documented clinical experience, and an examination. Supporting disciplines include radiography, nuclear medicine technology, and radiation therapy, subject to ARRT’s rules.
The 16 hours of structured education are one part of that pathway, rather than the entire qualification. Use the current CT documents effective from September 1, 2026, where applicable. ARRT’s clinical experience requirements explain documentation and timing rules.
MRI can be pursued through ARRT primary or postprimary pathways. Compare the route you qualify for, the available supervised clinical training, and local employer requirements. Do not assume a short online course alone qualifies you for either modality.
Questions for a Cross Training Agreement
- Is training paid, and who supervises and verifies the required clinical experience?
- What competency checks must I complete before independent work?
- Is a position in the new modality available, and how many of my shifts will use it?
- What is the base rate during training, after competency sign-off, and after certification?
- Who pays course, exam, renewal, and travel costs, and what must I repay if I leave?
How Much Radiology Tech School Costs
Compare program costs on the same basis. Tuition and fees, a program expense estimate, and a household cost-of-attendance budget cover different things. These published examples show the distinction.
| School and estimate period | Published estimate | Scope of the figure |
| Pima Community College Arizona 2026–27 | $17,114.10 | The school’s stated in-state program total, covering listed tuition and program expenses. Health insurance varies and the figure is not a complete cost of attendance. |
| Lincoln Land Community College Illinois Projected from fall 2026 | $19,490.50 plus travel | Estimated in-district program cost: $17,285.50 tuition and fees plus $2,205 in other expenses. Out-of-district tuition and fees are higher. |
| Bon Secours St Marys Hospital School of Medical Imaging Virginia 2026–27 | $37,275 for one academic year | A nine-month, 30-credit cost-of-attendance budget including $10,500 tuition and fees and living, transport, and other expenses. It is not a full-program tuition quote. |
These are illustrative published estimates, not a ranking of school value or quotes for every applicant. Ask each school for the total for your residency, prior credits, prerequisites, and expected completion route.
Add clinical travel and parking, childcare, health requirements, books, uniforms, credentials, financing costs, and earnings lost when you reduce work hours. Ask whether clinical placement is arranged, whether placements require substantial travel, and how the class schedule affects paid work.
Calculate the Return on Starting the Career
Suppose your full training investment is $34,000, including education expenses and lost earnings. You currently earn $22/hour. A new role at $30/hour, with the same 40 hours and 52 paid weeks, increases annual gross earnings by $16,640. Simple payback is about 25 months after you begin earning the higher wage.
At a $26 starting rate, the annual increase is $8,320 and payback is about 49 months. Both are hypothetical, before taxes and interest, and exclude a job-search delay or future raises. Use actual local starting offers, not the $80,110 workforce median, when deciding what you can afford to borrow.
Training Certification and State Licensing
For the ARRT primary pathway, you need an associate degree or higher, an ARRT-approved educational program in the discipline, and the required ethics and examination steps. Check your exact route before paying a deposit.
The JRCERT program directory helps you identify accredited radiography programs and review outcomes. However, JRCERT explains that ARRT recognizes other accrediting agencies too. Confirm exam eligibility directly with ARRT rather than assuming that general college accreditation or any single label settles it.
ARRT certification and state licensing are separate. A credential does not automatically authorize practice in every state. California, for example, has radiologic technology certificates and separate permit applications, including fluoroscopy. Check the requirements for the actual duties in your offer.
Limited-scope radiography is a different route from full radiography certification. Check the permitted examinations and the jobs that accept it before enrolling. Do not assume that a limited-scope qualification gives access to the same CT pathway or pay scale as an ARRT radiography credential.
Before choosing a program, review completion, first-attempt exam pass, and job-placement data, with cohort size and definitions. JRCERT’s outcomes guidance explains those measures. Ask whether prerequisites, a competitive admission cycle, or placement delays extend the advertised timeline. If you have an ethics eligibility concern, ask ARRT about its review process early.
US Canada England and Australia Compared
International comparisons need the occupation, currency, pay measure, and data year. The following rows use national wage data, an NHS pay scale, and a specific Australian employer example. They are not a purchasing-power ranking of equivalent offers.
| Location and occupation | Pay reference | How to read it |
| United States Radiologic technologists and technicians | US$38.52/hour or US$80,110/year median May 2025 | BLS occupation 29-2034 includes X-ray and CT. MRI is separate. |
| Canada Medical radiation technologists | C$40.00/hour median 2023–24 reference period, updated November 2025 | Job Bank NOC 32121 is broader than US general radiography and includes other medical radiation disciplines. |
| England NHS diagnostic radiographer Band 5 reference | £32,073 to £39,043/year basic pay 2026–27 | A pay scale for Band 5 posts, rather than an occupation-wide average. Higher-band posts and supplements have separate terms. |
| Australia SA Health graduate radiographer example | About A$76,800 to A$89,981/year base 2027 graduate intake advertised October 2026 | One employer’s AHP1 range, plus specified allowances and superannuation. It is not a national median or a guaranteed first-year rate. |
Canada: Job Bank also reports medians of C$46 in Alberta, C$45 in Ontario, and C$42 in British Columbia for the same broader occupation. Check its training and regulatory requirements and the relevant province. International graduates should review the CAMRT assessment process and provincial rules before assuming their existing credential will transfer.
England: the 2026–27 NHS England scale sets the Band 5 reference above. The National Careers Service describes approved degree, postgraduate, and apprenticeship routes and HCPC registration. Moving to a higher band requires the relevant post and responsibilities. Other UK nations have their own pay arrangements.
Australia: the SA Health graduate advertisement, posted October 12, 2026, is for regional South Australian positions. It lists additional allowances and requires an appropriate degree and professional registration. The lower end is rounded here because the advertisement contains a small discrepancy between two stated starting figures. Confirm the exact rate with the employer. Queensland Health’s registration guidance also explains assessment of overseas qualifications.
Before moving, check work authorization, recognition of your training, local registration, the exact modality, contract hours, housing, health coverage, and pension arrangements. Converting currencies alone cannot tell you which job leaves more money available for your household.
Compare Radiology with Other Healthcare Careers
| US occupation | May 2025 annual median | Decision to investigate |
| Surgical technologist | $64,650 | Operating room work, clinical training, and call expectations |
| Radiologic technologist or technician | $80,110 | Accepted credentials, local starting rates, and modality access |
| MRI technologist | $95,480 | Eligible training route, supervised clinical experience, and actual job offers |
| Diagnostic medical sonographer | $96,590 | Program access, specialty credentials, placement, and physical demands |
Source: the same BLS May 2025 national dataset, using separate occupation codes. These are workforce medians, rather than the starting pay you automatically receive after retraining.

Estimate What Will Reach Your Bank Account
The national median divided by 12 is $6,675.83 in monthly gross pay. Subtract estimated federal, state, and local withholding, payroll taxes, employee benefits costs, retirement contributions, and other deductions. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can help with applicable federal withholding; account for state and local taxes separately.
From estimated take-home pay, subtract your household costs, loan payments, and savings target. Request the benefits premium schedule before accepting. For travel work, include continuing home expenses and weeks between contracts.
A Practical Negotiation Example
Adapt this to facts you can support: “Thank you for the offer. Based on comparable local positions and my recent experience in these modalities, I am seeking $40 an hour in base pay. Can you confirm the guaranteed hours, differential, and call requirements? If the pay step is fixed, could we discuss experience credit, funded CT training, credential reimbursement, or a scheduled pay review?”
Ask for the pay change and its conditions in writing. A sign-on bonus can improve initial cash flow, but its payment schedule, retention period, and repayment terms matter separately from recurring base pay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Radiology Tech Make Six Figures
Yes. The national 75th percentile is $98,750 and the 90th percentile is $118,660 in straight-time annual wages. California’s statewide median exceeds $100,000. That does not make six figures a typical new graduate offer, and some advertised totals include overtime or reimbursements.
Does MRI Pay More Than X Ray
The BLS MRI median of $95,480 exceeds the $80,110 median for radiologic technologists and technicians, which includes X-ray and CT. The $15,370 difference compares occupations across workers and locations. It is not the raise a specific radiographer is promised for moving to MRI.
What Does a 36 Hour Schedule Pay
At $38/hour, 36 paid hours a week for 52 weeks produces $71,136. Forty paid hours produces $79,040. Confirm paid weeks, scheduled hours, and any cancellation policy instead of treating every full-time job as 2,080 paid hours.
How Long Does It Take to Become a Radiology Tech
An associate degree route is common, but prerequisites, admission cycles, clinical placement, examination, and state processing can extend the time before you start work. Ask the school for the timeline that applies to your prior credits and intended credential.
Is Radiology Tech Work Right for You
Explore the actual workplace before enrolling. Ask about patient movement, standing, emergency work, nights, weekends, safety training, and supervision. If possible, arrange an approved observation opportunity. A higher wage is useful only if the schedule, responsibilities, and training route also fit your circumstances.
Sources and How We Compared Salaries
US national and state wage figures come from the BLS May 2025 OEWS files. Radiologic technologists and technicians use SOC 29-2034, and MRI uses 29-2035. The state table includes the 50 states and excludes the District of Columbia and territories. Equal annual medians share a rank. Employment is an estimate of existing jobs, not vacancies.
BLS annual and hourly wages are independently rounded, so multiplying an hourly figure by 2,080 may differ slightly from its published annual wage. Percentiles do not identify experience levels. The ASRT modality comparison keeps its own 2024 survey year and mean measure. Our price comparison uses BEA 2024 prices, the latest release available for this update.
International figures retain their original currency, time period, occupation scope, and pay type. Employer and college examples are dated or tied to their published estimate period. Reddit accounts remain unverified self-reports. Financial examples are hypothetical calculations, rather than observed outcomes or individualized tax estimates.
- BLS May 2025 national workbook and state workbook contain the underlying wage data.
- BLS career outlook projects 5 percent growth for radiologic technologists and technicians and 8 percent for MRI technologists from 2025 to 2035. These are separate occupation projections, not a guarantee of local vacancies.
- BEA regional price parities explain the state price measure used above.
